The Pitch

What is it and who’s it for?

It’s always seemed to me that one way or another, everyone wants to be in the movie business. Whether you’ve spent a professional career writing scripts like I have, or happen to be a regular Jane or Joe who’s just been struck with a jolt of cinematic inspiration — at some point in our lives, everybody’s at least had an idea for a movie or TV show.

And the only thing truly separating me from the latter is that I decided to try my hand at putting that first idea to paper. Which, in my case, was pure plagiarism — when, as a kid, I returned home from watching Spielberg’s E.T. for the thirteenth time in theaters, so infatuated by the experience, that I proceeded to write down my interpretation of the entire screenplay from memory. In cursive. On notebook paper. I still have it.

All that to say, I’m guessing a lot of you out there reading this have shared that same screenwriting bug, but never quite knew exactly how to go about bringing your ideas to fruition. Or perhaps you have, but still feel like you’re stuck outside the door to some private club that requires a secret knock to gain entry.

And that, my friends, is where I come in — by respectfully offering my professional Script Consulting and Screenwriting Coaching services to help you try to achieve what I’ve been fortunate enough to achieve.

So why should I work with you?

Please check out my bio, but in a nutshell, I’ve been successfully writing and selling scripts and pitches to Hollywood for thirty years, and in that time, I’ve managed to learn a thing or two about making the sale. Now, admittedly, there was a lot of luck involved in my path to the silver screen, and there’s certainly more than one way to skin a cat — but what I can promise is to teach you exactly how I managed to do it, and have continued to do so, over and over again — how I went from sitting in a cubicle in Seattle, taking airline reservations over a headset, to sitting in rooms in Hollywood across from some of the most successful filmmakers and movie stars of all time, doing that which I love most. Writing movies.

I think we can all agree that the pure art of screenwriting is inherently subjective, however it’s also a craft — that’s subject to objective and finite industry standards and expectations that must be met in order for one to achieve success. And while I make no claim to being some brilliant artiste, what I do pride myself in is having mastered the craft of screenwriting, such that I’ve managed to option or sell the vast majority of scripts and pitches I’ve taken to market over my career.

With my program, I provide personal, one-on-one private coaching tailored to your particular screenplay or idea, offering honest, unvarnished but constructive feedback from the perspective of a successful, working Hollywood screenwriter.

Okay, now bring it home!

Sure, you can take your chances spending your hard-earned cash watching some impersonal pre-recorded video of an Oscar-winner who’s never read your script; or by taking classes at some film school, learning about theory and the vagaries of screenwriting (I should know, I’ve done that, too) — or you can make that same investment (or far less actually) to get hands-on, tailored advice and concrete consultation on your unique project from an actual professional who’s spent decades consistently overcoming the odds in this industry.

Look, the movie business is notoriously difficult to break into, and I make no guarantees that my coaching will result in the sale of your script — however, what I can promise you is this: If you take the time to diligently implement the step-by-step tenets of my hard-won experience, you will tremendously increase your odds of success, and potentially save yourself months or even years of toil going down misguided paths of creative frustration.

You only live once, and if you’ve ever had a dream to write movies or TV shows, it’s never too late to give it a shot — especially since you could literally be just one script sale away from living your dream. Certainly, it’s all easier said than done, but as hockey legend Wayne Gretzky once famously remarked, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”
